Regents Park Competition Entry

The planting scheme for the new RPWCA competition entry was inspired by the Japanese concept of Satoyama. Its aim is to bring together in the plant selection -  the forest edge, the meadows, the fields/prairies and our back gardens.

Satoyama, is a man-made landscape made to look and behave as naturalistic as possible with minimal intervention and management. The landscape is allowed to evolve as naturally as possible.

It will offer opportunities for experimentation and research into future resilient plants. The variety of planting will offer habitats, shelters and food source for wildlife over a long period of time.

All areas within the space have been designed using a matrix. A mix of mostly 50% evergreen ferns and grasses and 50% herbaceous perennials for all seasons. This allows for denser planting, less need for weeding / watering and the plants help carry each other.

This approach helps to bring everything together in a naturalistic style. It works best with the theme and with wildlife, blending harmoniously and avoiding the use of obvious sections and borders.
