Provender Competition Entry

Provender nursery asked for the bed right in front of their entrance to be re-designed in order to have maximum impact and be used as a demonstration and educational area.

The design required usage of their Proven Winners® plants range and to reflect all year-round interest.

Our concept was inspired by the autumn red/yellow of the existing Acer. These are the prominent colours of flowers/foliage in spring/winter, while white is linking the seasons in the summer.

Plants were selected for all year interest. The Forsythia koreana ‘Flying Machine’® and Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Orange Storm’® start blooming in early spring and provide structure over the winter with their arching branches.

The colour scheme continues with the new orange foliage of the Diervilla ‘Kodiak Orange’ and the fresh red tinged leaves of the Viburnum ‘Shiny Dancer’, which also provides evergreen structure.

Two Heptacodium ‘Temple of Bloom’ trees prolong the season of interest with their peeling bark, adding height alongside the Acer. Its red bracts reflect the red fruit of the Cephalanthus ‘Sugar Shack’ and the Sambucus ‘Lemony Lace’ in autumn. Spent flower seedheads will also provide additional winter interest.

In summer, the Hydrangea ‘Strong Annabelle’ and Hydrangea ‘Gatsby Moon’ take centre stage, providing a wow factor for incoming customers. These are punctuated with the small white button flowers of the Cephalanthus ‘Sugar Shack’.

The existing access from The Paddock tree field has been incorporated into the new path area.
